vCloud is a platform and a set of services that creates and optimizes highly efficient, secure hybrid clouds for multi-tenant organizations. vCloud features self-service access and application catalogs. vCloud also has built into it the required levels of corporate security and control that are traditionally provided by physical data centers.

vCloud Director is the foundation for vCloud. vCloud Director creates virtual data centers (vdc's) from multiple clusters. These clusters can include any combination of private clouds, public clouds, or both. The virtual data centers are fully functional with pools of compute, network and storage resources.

Internal IT organizations can then offer vdc's to their business partners through fully automated self-service access, defined management policies, SLAs and pricing. Business partners can enjoy the benefits provided by cloud infrastructures while IT ensures the security and control that are typically provided by physical data centers.
